Doug Mercer
From private reading, to the classroom, to every social interaction, the love of a good narrative has driven Doug Mercer’s career in education, and the narrative that has brought him to Leahurst College has been an interesting one.
Following his graduation from UBC with a BA in English Literature, Mr. Mercer earned a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching from Auckland University of Technology. For the following ten years, he brought his engaging teaching style to classrooms in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and, most recently, Dubai. As Key Stage 3 (middle school) Coordinator of English at Repton Dubai, Mr. Mercer was privileged to have made numerous changes to the curriculum to provide students with a valuable learning experience focusing on independent learning and critical thinking. During his tenure, the English department has progressed from a rating of ‘good’ to ‘outstanding’, particularly in the area of personalised learning.
Further to the role, Mr. Mercer liaised with Repton junior school to provide students with the best possible transition into the senior school, coordinated author visits and school-wide competitions, was one of Repton’s two IB Theory of Knowledge teachers, and served as tutee to offer guidance to a cohort from their first days in Year 7 to their graduation in Year 11.
When not working, Mr. Mercer enjoys spending time with his family and enjoying the outdoors.
